Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Moss Point, Mississippi

Moss Point is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi. The city, which has a population of about 18,000, is located at the junction of the Pascagoula and Escatawpa Rivers. This former timber city is largely residential, though it still maintains some manufacturing. Though severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Moss Point continues to work to attract business and tourism to the area, stressing the city's natural beauty and ample open spaces. Moss Point's lakes and riverfront area are popular venues for watersports and festivals of all kind, including the RiverFront Musical Concert and Christmas by the River. Redevelopment plans are underway for a new fire station and city hall, among other projects. Local industries include specialty chemicals and polymers, fish meal and shipbuilding.

Jackson County, including Moss Point, began to be settled around 1812. Moss Point was an ideal location for the timber industry, with ready access to two rivers, and stands of dense pinewoods. Experienced loggers and lumbermen moved to Moss Point, established sawmills, and began sending timber downriver for export from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1877, L.N. Dantzler purchased his father-in-law's sawmill, which he expanded until it was one of the largest mills in Mississippi. By the early 20th century, Moss Point had nine sawmills in operation in a one-mile area. Clear-cutting and skidder logging eventually depleted much of the lumber supply. Although efforts were made to utilize sawmill waste and second-growth trees, the mill gradually began to close in the 1920s. The Dantzler sawmills were mostly closed by 1946. The International Paper Company, which had taken over the Southern Paper Company in 1928, acquired several of the Dantzler properties in 1966. International Paper closed its own plant in Moss Point in 2001. Other notable Moss Point business have included Rogers Brothers Machine Shop and Foundry, which produced crank shafts for Coast Guard patrol boats, and the Thiokol Chemical Company.
