Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Meridian, Mississippi

Meridian is the sixth largest city in Mississippi, and the seat of Lauderdale County. With a population of approximately 38,000 occupying a nearly 46-square mile area, Meridian’s diverse economy incorporates healthcare, manufacturing, military and retail. The city's nine historic districts offer an array of architectural styles. Highland Park houses antique railroad engines, a museum highlighting the career of country musician Jimmie Rodgers, and a beautifully restored 1909 Dentzel carousel. Meridian is also home to two military bases, Naval Air Station Meridian, commissioned in 1961, and Key Field, which was established as a regional airfield in 1928 and today provides support for the Army and Air National Guards.

Easterners began to settle in Meridian in 1831, following a treaty with the Choctaw Indians. Meridian was still a modest farming community in 1855, when the railroads came through. Meridian incorporated in 1860 and provided needed Confederate support during the Civil War, including an arsenal, hospital, and several state offices, causing General Sherman to destroy the railroads and burn much of the city in 1864. The residents quickly rebuilt the railroads and by 1890, Meridian had become a major manufacturing and shipping center. In 1885, with help from mental health advocate Dorothea Dix, the East Mississippi State Insane Asylum received its first patient. Today, operating as East Mississippi State Hospital, it is one of Meridian's top employers, along with Rush Hospital, Riley Hospital and Anderson Regional Medical Center, established in 1928. Retail is an important part of Meridian's economy, and Loeb's Department Store has been a fixture since it opened in 1887. Meridian has also maintained a manufacturing base, which currently includes guitar and audio equipment manufacturer Peavey Electronics, Avery Dennison, Lockheed Martin and Structural Steel Services.

An active manufacturing industry combined with cycles of commercial and residential construction make asbestos exposure an ongoing concern for workers, who may be at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
