Columbus is a city in Lowndes County, Mississippi, located near the confluence of the Tombigbee, Buttahatchie and Luxapalila Rivers. With a population of nearly 24,000 occupying 22.3 square miles, Columbus offers a mix of industry, recreation and education in a scenic setting. Columbus has a significant number of intact antebellum homes, many of which are open to the public. The city is also home to the state’s first public school, Franklin Academy, founded in 1821, and the Mississippi University for Women, a liberal arts college founded in 1884. Playwright Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus in 1911, and his family home, a former church rectory, is preserved as the city’s Welcome Center.

Columbus Overview

Columbus, which was informally known as “Possum Town” before its incorporation in 1821, began to grow after the War of 1812, as retired military officers returned with their families to settle in the area. A treaty in 1830 opened more land for settlement, and prosperous easterners established large homesteads. Cotton production was an important economic factor through most of the 19th century. In 1941, Columbus Air Force Base was founded as a flying school, and is currently home to the 14th Flying Training Wing. Since the mid-20th century, Columbus has developed a manufacturing base, beginning with products such as textiles, furniture and plumbing supplies, and focusing in recent decades on paper products and defense systems. Weyerhaeuser maintains a pulp and paper complex which is served by its own short-line railroad. Aerospace companies such as American Eurocopter, Aurora Flight Sciences and Stark Aerospace can take advantage of proximity to the Air Force Base, and of the relatively stable local flight conditions. Other top employers include Metso Paper, which makes paper-making machinery, and Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Columbus has had an active history of manufacturing throughout the 20th century, in industries known to have used asbestos-containing materials. Workers exposed to asbestos are at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma clinics in and around Columbus are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Columbus, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
