Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Weymouth, Massachusetts

The Town of Weymouth was incorporated in 1635, and is located approximately twelve miles southeast of Boston. As the second oldest town in Massachusetts, Weymouth's 21.61 square miles have been almost fully developed over the years. Many former industrial properties have been repurposed for residential and commercial uses. As a result, Weymouth today retains many traces of its early history, from 19th century factory buildings and handsome Victorian homes, to street patterns dating back to the Colonial era. Industrial areas around the Weymouth Fore River and Weymouth Back River, including a former Nike missile base, have been reclaimed as green space and form present-day Webb State Park.

Founded in 1622 as Wessagusset Colony, Weymouth's early years were rocky. Poor planning led to food shortages which bred theft, illness and general disorder, and strained relations with the neighboring Massachuset native communities. The settlement eventually was strengthened by new arrivals from England, and in 1635 was incorporated as the town of Weymouth. Fishing and agriculture were the primary means of subsistence. In 1837, bog iron was discovered in the town, and the Weymouth Iron Works was built. Development of local banking and railroads increased led to increased commerce and a population of more than 6,000 by 1870. When the foundry closed, shoemaking, which began in Weymouth in the 17th century, grew to become the dominant manufacturing industry. The Stetson Shoe Company operated until 1973, and the factory building has since been converted to an office complex. Weymouth also has longstanding ties to aviation. In 1930, the New England Air Ship Corporation blimp "Neponset" landed at Stetson Field. In 1942, Naval Air Station South Weymouth opened, providing facilities for Navy dirigibles until 1961. The base was officially closed in 1997 and is currently slated for redevelopment to include movie studios, housing and recreation areas.

Because of its status as a "mature" community, with little undeveloped land, Weymouth has an active history of renovating and restoring older properties. This, along with its manufacturing roots, puts Weymouth workers in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure and asbestos-related illnesses. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Weymouth, you may benefit by seeking council from an asbestos attorney.
