Asbestos Exposure in Salem, MA

Salem, incorporated in 1836, is the second incorporated city in Massachusetts, and has a population of approximately 40,000. Salem's official nickname is the "City of Peace," but it is better known as the "Witch City" for its association with the Witchcraft Trials of 1692. Salem was also an important trading port for nearly two hundred years, so much so that its waterfront area was designated as the nation's first National Historic Site by Congress. Salem's center and waterfront areas are quite compact, and visitors to Salem today will find a wealth of attractions within a few minutes' walk of each other, including many pre-1900 homes, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, and the House of the Seven Gables.

Located on Massachusetts Bay between Salem Harbor and Beverly Harbor, Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant and a group of Cape Ann fisherman. From the first, Salem was a valuable seaport. During the American Revolution, Salem vessels were issued some 1,700 Letters of Marque - official documents granting permission to capture or sink British ships. Profits from privateering and from the burgeoning China trade made Salem wealthy, and many of the elegant Federal-style homes and mansions built by sea captains and merchants still stand today, including that of Nathaniel Bowditch, father of modern navigation. Shipping began to decline through the 19th century, and manufacturing took its place, particularly tanneries and shoe factories. The Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company operated opposite Derby Wharf from 1845-1953. The Korn Leather Factory fire of 1914 destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses, but luckily much of the historic district was spared. In recent decades, a flourishing tourism industry has grown up around Salem's witch trials and maritime history, as well as shops and services catering to New Age and Neo-Pagan interests. Salem is also home to Salem State College, Massachusetts’s largest state college.
