Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Plymouth, Massachusetts

The Town of Plymouth, Massachusetts is the oldest community in New England, settled in 1620 by the passengers of the English ship Mayflower. Plymouth is also the largest town by land area in Massachusetts. With an estimated population of around 58,000, Plymouth is larger than many Massachusetts cities, but has never reincorporated as such. Located 40 miles south of Boston, Plymouth forms the western shore of Cape Cod Bay. Plymouth residents are proud of their town's status as "America's Hometown," whose many history-based attractions include Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum which recreates parts of the 1627 English and Native settlements, and the Mayflower II, a working replica of the original ship. Plymouth also maintains the only operational nuclear power plant in Massachusetts, the Pilgrim Nuclear Generating Station, built by Boston Edison in 1972.

After landing at Plymouth, the English settled among the Wamponoag Native People, whose numbers had been heavily reduced by disease a few years earlier. With the aid of several prominent Wamponoag, including tribal leader, or sachem, Massasoit and the English-speaking Tisquantum (Squanto), the colonists learned to fish and to raise local crops. Plymouth remained an agricultural and fishing settlement through the early 19th century. Shipbuilding and shipping developed during the 19th century, leading to its principal industry of ropemaking. The Plymouth Cordage Company, founded in 1824, was once the world's largest rope and cordage manufacturer, boasting a quarter-mile ropewalk. The company failed in the 1960s, and the factory has since been converted for retail and commercial use. Highway development in the 1970s led to increased growth as Plymouth became more accessible to Boston. Today tourism is the primary industry, with healthcare, high-tech research and telecommunications also contributing to the economic base. Jordan Hospital is currently Plymouth's largest employer, serving a dozen towns in the South Shore area.

Plymouth's rapid development in recent decades, with its accompanying residential and commercial construction projects, makes asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cancer risk an ongoing concern.
