Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Brockton, Massachusetts

Brockton is one of the county seats for Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and has a population slightly over 93,000. Brockton is known for its high school sports programs, and has produced several successful professional athletes, including boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler.

Founded in 1649, Brockton was part of an area of land sold to Myles Standish as an addition to Duxbury. It was called Bridgewater, until 1821, when it became the town of North Bridgewater. The town was renamed Brockton in 1874, and was incorporated as a city on April 9, 1881. During the American Civil War, demand for shoes for the army was high, and Brockton rose to prominence as the largest manufacturer of shoes in the United States. The nearby Salisbury River was a convenient source of water power for many of the city's shoe factories.  The shoe and leather products industries dominated Brockton commerce into the 20th century, and included such names as the R.B. Grover Shoe Company and W.L. Douglas Shoe Company.  A steam boiler explosion and fire at the Grover Shoe factory in 1905 led to passage of a boiler inspection act, and ultimately to establishment of a national code for boiler safety.

On October 1, 1883, Brockton became the first community in the world to have an underground, three-wire electrical system, with Thomas Edison himself throwing the switch at the Brockton Edison Illuminating Light and Power Company. This system was designed by Edison to be a complete central power station, providing power and light first to several local businesses, including the local fire station and the City Theater, and eventually to the entire community.  "The Brockton Operation" proved successful, and became the model for similar installations worldwide.  The original power station still stands, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though manufacturing has declined in Brockton, many historic buildings remain and a number of museums exist to document and preserve Brockton's industrial past, including the Shoe Museum, and Brockton Fire Museum.

At one time, Brockton was among the most progressive industrial towns in the country, making many advances in shoe manufacturing and electrical light and power generation.  The activities of these industries may have resulted in workers being exposed to asbestos and placed at risk for asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma cancer.
