Sterlington is a town in Ouachita parish, Louisiana. Incorporated in 1961, Sterlington has a current population of just over 1,400 residents in a 2.3 square mile area sited on the Ouachita River. Sterlington's most prominent industry historically has been chemical processing and manufacture. A branch of the Little Rock & Monroe Railroad was run through Sterlington in 1905, and natural gas was discovered in the area in 1918. By the early 20th century, companies such as Peerless Carbon Company and Imperial Oil & Gas Company were using natural gas from the Monroe gas field. The Thermatomic Carbon Black Company was established in 1922 and acquired by the Commercial Solvents Company in the late 1930s. Dixie Ordnance Works, as it was known, was purchased from the government by CSC in 1946, and its products used in fertilizer manufacturing. Commercial Solvents Corporation was purchased by International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation in 1975, which established a separate nitroparaffin division. Additional expansions followed and the nitroparaffin plant eventually became ANGUS Chemical Company, a division of the Dow Chemical Company. ANGUS remains a key employer and civic partner in Sterlington today.

Sterlington has a history of heavy industry and construction which has made asbestos exposure a cause for concern. Asbestos-containing products were widely used in the first half of the 20th century for insulation and building materials. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Sterlington, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
