Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Harvey, Louisiana

Harvey is a census-designated place in Louisiana. Located on the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, Harvey is a suburb of New Orleans and has a population of about 22,200. Due to its location on the canal which connects the Mississippi River to Bayou Barataria, much of Harvey's industry centers on marine services and transportation. Typical employers include Acme Truck Line, aluminum boat designers Midship Marine, and marine exhaust systems supplier Fabacher Inc.

In 1844, Joseph Harvey built a Gothic Revival mansion for his wife that was known as Harvey Castle. The castle’s distinctive octagonal turrets served as a navigational marker for steamboats along the canal. From 1874-1884, the castle served as the Jefferson Parish courthouse, and was torn down in 1924 to allow for expansion of the canal and locks. The enlarged canal led to development of a number of shipping and marine related businesses during the 20th century. The Jefferson Distilling and Denaturing Company converted molasses distillery waste into potash for fertilizer. Shipbuilders included American Tugs, Bobben Fabricators and Harvey Industries. The George Engine Company was a major distributor of marine diesel engines. Companies such as Halliburton, Texaco and Hunt-Wesson Foods also had operations in Harvey at one time. Although many of these companies are no longer present in Harvey, a new generation has taken their place, represented by companies such as FMT Shipyard & Repair, Guico Machine Works, and Petrex, Inc., which makes modular process equipment.

Harvey has a history of heavy industry in fields known historically for their use of asbestos-containing materials.
