Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Chalmette, Louisiana

Chalmette is the parish seat of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. An unincorporated community located on the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet east of New Orleans, Chalmette had a population of about 32,000 in 2000. Petroleum and sugar refining have long been prominent local industries. Chalmette was heavily damaged by flooding from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, causing a substantial drop in population and industry, although the area has been slowly recovering. Notable employers include Murphy Oil Corporation, Chalmette Refining, LLC, and American Sugar Refining, Inc.

Substantial industrialization did not occur in Chalmette until the 20th century. In 1909, the American Sugar Refining Company opened its new processing plant. It took four years to construct, and at the time it was the largest sugar refinery in the world. In 2005, flooding from Katrina caused severe damage to the refinery's equipment; replacement machinery included upgraded robotic equipment to handle the packaged sugar. Kaiser Aluminum's Chalmette Works, built in 1951, was the world's largest aluminum reduction plant in its day, but operated only until about 1980. Tenneco Oil Company and Murphy Oil both established refineries in the mid-20th century. The Tenneco refinery is currently operated by ExxonMobil. Murphy Oil experienced a Hurricane Katrina-related oil spill, but has since resumed normal operations. Chalmette has also been home to several shipyards through the years, including Bergeron Shipyard and Blue Streak Industries.
