Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Athens, Georgia

Located in northern Georgia just below the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits the city of Athens. Athens began as a small settlement near the confluence of the North and Middle Oconee Rivers and in 1806, the city was officially incorporated. The University of Georgia opened for class in 1801 and remains in the city today. Athens is known as the intellectual center of Georgia due to its early, education-based roots.

After the Civil War, Athens was guided through the reconstruction period by University of Georgia leadership, including such men as Benjamin Harvey Hill and Howell Cobb. In the early 20th century, Athens regained momentum with textile factories and related businesses, and the University of Georgia was internationally recognized as an educational and research institution. Athens experienced immense growth during and after World War II. Outside industry moved into the city from the 1950s through 1970s. Companies such as Dairy Pak, Gold Kist and Westinghouse Electric Corporation opened manufacturing plants in Athens. In 1954, the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School moved operations to an Athens campus. The influx of new industry brought executives to the city, and in turn Athens’ population swelled. Athens’ largest employer, The University of Georgia, is still the principal factor in the city’s increasingly diversified economy. Major current industries include poultry and timber.

As a result of the city’s manufacturing and construction industries, asbestos in the workplace has long been a problem. Workers who were exposed to asbestos may be at risk to develop mesothelioma, an asbestos cancer that affects more than 3,000 individuals every year in the United States.
