Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Shelton, Connecticut

Nestled in the Naugatuck valley, Shelton is a small town in Fairfield County. Initially settled as part of Stratford, Shelton officially incorporated as an independent city in 1915. In 1919, Shelton was consolidated with the town of Huntington establishing the current city of Shelton. The city was named after Edward N. Shelton, founder of the Shelton Company and the Ousatonic Water Power Company. Shelton boasts a country setting with urban sophistication and historic charm. Shelton continues to be one of Connecticut's fastest growing communities in Connecticut and has one of the state's lowest tax rates and one of its lowest unemployment rates.

Shelton expanded during the Industrial Revolution. Factories lined the streets producing everything from pins, tacks, bolts, paper boxes, and printing presses to the famous Huntington piano. By the early 1900s, the population had more than tripled to 5,545 residents, and they all lived somewhere close to the factories. In 1975, Shelton was home to one of the largest arson fires in the history of the United States. The Sponge Rubber Products plant (formerly owned by B.F. Goodrich) was set on fire. In 1988, in a civil lawsuit, a jury ruled the insurer did not have to pay fire-related claims because evidence showed the fire was planned by the company's top officials arranged to claim insurance money. Eight company officials were convicted or pleaded guilty. This fire marked the beginning of the decline of Shelton's industries. Up through the 1980s, many companies that operated factories along the banks of the Housatonic River either went out of business or relocated to towns and cities where labor and operating costs were cheaper. In 1995, Sikorsky Aircraft closed a plant off of Bridgeport Avenue that manufactured electrical components for helicopters. Since that time, efforts to revitalize Shelton's downtown area have been ongoing. Some prominent companies in Shelton include Wiffle Ball, Inc., Sikorsky Aircraft, Pitney Bowes, Health Net, and Perkin-Elmer (Life and Analytical sciences division).
