Asbestos Exposure in Cupertino, CA

Cupertino, suburban city in Santa Clara County, California, is located west of San Jose on the western edge of the Santa Clara Valley with portions extending into the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Occupying a total area of 11.25 square miles, Cupertino is home to more than 58,000 people and boasts about its moderate size and unique, balanced mix of high technology firms, retail center, open space, quality schools and residential areas. Cupertino is probably best known as home to the worldwide headquarters of Apple Inc.

Cupertino in the 19th century was a small rural village. The primary economic activity was fruit agriculture, with nearly all of the land covered by prune, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards. A winery on Montebello Ridge overlooking the Cupertino valley region was also operating by the late 19th century. In the late 1940's, Cupertino was swept up in Santa Clara Valley's postwar population explosion and suburban housing boom, substantially shifting the demographics and economy. Until the 1960s, Cupertino remained largely a town of ranches and estate vineyards. A significant milestone in Cupertino's development was the creation, by some of the city's largest landowners, of VALLCO Business and Industrial Park in the early 1960s. Today, the private sector in Cupertino is dominated by high-tech electronics and computer corporations. The city serves as a corporate headquarters and center for research and development. Virtually no manufacturing takes place in the city. Some of the largest high-technology firms in the world have operations in Cupertino, like Apple, Inc. , Hewlett Packard, and Symantec. One of the major employers in the area is the aggregate rock quarry and cement plant in the foothills to the west of Cupertino. Currently owned and operated by Lehigh Southwest Cement, it was originally founded by Henry J. Kaiser as the Kaiser Permanente Cement Plant in 1939.

Cupertino’s history of construction and renovation place it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers and loved ones exposed to asbestos may be at risk for developing asbestos cancer. If you have been exposed to asbestos in Cupertino, California, you may benefit by seeking counsel from an asbestos lawyer.
