Asbestos Exposure in Hopewell, VA

Hopewell is an independent city of Virginia overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers, with a population of about 23,000 people. The city was originally known as “Hopewell Farm”, an area developed by DuPont Company in 1914 to house a dynamite factory. By 1916, Hopewell became an official independent city and began developing into a 20th century industrial haven.

For almost four centuries, Hopewell’s location has been a principal factor in the city’s prosperity. Although DuPont closed their dynamite and guncotton factories following World War I, many manufacturing giants have since established facilities in Hopewell, which helped lead the city through the 20th century. Chemical manufacturers such as Honeywell, Smurfit Stone Container Corporation, and Hercules, Inc. have operated in Hopewell over the years. In the 1930s, a merger of five American chemical companies - Solvay Process Company, General Chemical, Barrett Company, Selmet Solvay, and National Aniline & Chemical Company - formed a new massive corporation, Allied Chemical Company. Allied Chemical opened a synthetic ammonia plant in Hopewell and soon became the world’s leading producer of ammonia. Modern-day Hopewell has experienced many environmental issues due to its longstanding chemical and industrial history, and is working to rebuild and restore its large waterfront area, downtown area, and historical district.
