Danville, Virginia

Danville is an independent city found in south-central Virginia and is known as the “City of Churches”, with more churches per square mile than any other city in the state. Danville was the last capital of the Confederate States of America and was formerly home to Dan River Industries, one of the world’s largest textile mills. On February 17, 1830, a charter for the town was drawn up but by the time of its issue, the population exceeded the prearranged boundaries and a new charter was issued in 1833.

Danville’s history is full of enterprising citizens who helped the city establish a solid economy. By the 20th century, six innovative citizens founded Riverside Cotton Mills, the largest single-mill textile facility of the time. In 1909, Riverside Cotton Mills merged with Dan River Power & Manufacturing Company to form Dan River, Inc. Dan River Mill manufactured apparel fabrics and home fashion products, such as bedding, and is best known for the bed-in-a-bag concept. Over the years, Dan River’s apparel fabric was sold to Brooks Brothers, Liz Claiborne, and L.L. Bean but in recent times, the shift in global economy resulted in the closing of the mill. Gujarat Heavy Chemicals bought Dan River and transferred the remainder of production overseas. Danville also housed many tobacco companies such as Dorrell Bros Tobacco Company and Virginia Tobacco. Current top employers in the area are Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Averett University, Nestle, and Danville Regional Medical Center.
