By 1978 the Urban Renewal Project helped funnel more than $125 million into renovating the city's urban core. Though Waco's economy suffered a downturn in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the city worked to bring tourist dollars into the area by building a zoo at Cameron Park and attracting the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
