In 1930, the East Texas oilfield was discovered and Tyler emerged as an important regional center for the oil and gas industry. By the mid-1960s, Tyler had 125 manufacturing plants employing 8,000 workers. Some of the significant industries during this time included aluminum foundries, petroleum and chemical plants, concrete block plants, machinery manufacturers, and air-conditioning and refrigeration plants. Roses, other horticultural production, and cattle and hay production accounted for most of the agricultural industry. Today, Tyler's manufacturing sector includes Tyler Pipe, a subsidiary of McWane Inc.; Trane, this plant was originally built in 1955 by General Electric; and Delek Refining, a Crown Central Petroleum subsidiary.
