Richardson, Texas

Richardson, Texas, named in honor of railroad contractor E. H. Richardson, is a city in northern Dallas and southern Collin counties chartered in 1873 on the Houston and Texas Central Railway tracks. Home to more than 91,000 residents, Richardson is a residential and electronic manufacturing suburb of Dallas. In 2009, Richardson was ranked 2nd in Texas on Business Week's annual "Best Places to Raise Kids" report; and it ranked 18th by Money magazine as the "Best place to live in the United States" in 2008.

Richardson was introduced to the electronic era in the early 1950s and soon earned the nickname “electronic suburb”. Technology industries, such as Collins Radio began moving operations to Richardson. The once agricultural community transformed into a city of shopping centers and homes replacing cotton fields. The 1960s was largely a decade for development of recreational parks such as Huffhines Park and Prairie Creek Park, and for the construction of numerous industrial parks—among other businesses, twenty-two manufacturing firms opened during this time making such things as machine parts, space tracking systems, and television cameras. While commercial development continued during the 1970s and part of 1980s in Richardson, this time period was largely a time of residential growth. Forty percent of the homes in Richardson were built between 1970 and 1979. In the late 1980s, business again expanded with an influx of telecommunication firms, earning Richardson a new nickname, "Telecom Corridor". Today, more than 5,000 businesses have operations within Richardson's city limits, including several of the world's largest telecommunications and networking companies such as AT&T, Verizon, Cisco Systems, Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Fujitsu. While Richardson is no longer the bedroom community of the 1950s and 1960s, it is a significant employment center, where more than 80,000 people work each day.
