Beaumont, Texas

Beaumont is a city in and county seat of Jefferson County, located in eastern Texas. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area along the Gulf Coast. Beaumont has a long history as the first major oil-producing cities in America, which helped shape Beaumont as it evolved from a small rice and lumber town to a significant player in the oil industry. Today the city of Beaumont boasts an old-style Texas town, many historic elements of the city have been preserved, with a modern twist. Beaumont has been home to the South Texas State Fair since 1907 and the site of Lamar University since 1923.

Beaumont was officially incorporated on December 16, 1838. During the early years, the city was a center for cattle raisers and farmers. In the late 1800s, Beaumont became a major lumber and rice-milling town. Due to Beaumont's location on the Neches River, it was an active river port (known today as the Port of Beaumont). Accordingly, Beaumont capitalized on the lumber boom of the late 19th century shipping lumber across the country, which largely helped rebuild the railroads after the Civil War. The first commercial rice mill in Texas was the Beaumont Rice Mill. In 1901, the face of Beaumont and its livelihood would soon change. On January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher at Spindletop Oil Field exploded revealing the natural resource that lay below Beaumont. Within days of the explosion, approximately 40,000 curious sightseers, speculators and job-seekers came to Beaumont. As a result hotels, restaurants and businesses were built throughout Beaumont to accommodate the sudden increase in population. Over the next few years, dozens of oil companies were founded. Six wells were constructed on Spindletop Hill. As a result, Spindletop was the first major oil field and the largest oil field in the United States, helping make the United States the world's leading petroleum-producing nation. Thus, the Petroleum Age was born. Magnolia Petroleum Company became a major company in Beaumont in 1901. Magnolia later sold 45% ownership to Standard Oil which later merged with Exxon to form ExxonMobil. Gulf States Utilities had its headquarters in Beaumont until its absorption by Entergy Corporation in 1993. The Port of Beaumont, which ranks as the nation's 4th largest seaport by tonnage, and the 2nd largest military seaport in the world, is still a major element of the region's economy.

Because of Beaumont's oil-producing history coupled with its active construction industry , exposure to asbestos has been an issue. Workers and others exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Beaumont, you may benefit from contacting Dr. David Rice.
