Greenwood, South Carolina
Chartered in 1856, the city of Greenwood serves as county seat of Greenwood County and is today the seventeenth largest city in South Carolina with a population of 22,400. Greenwood was named in 1824 after the 600-acre plantation of an early resident, John McGhee, Jr. The city has been designated the “Emerald City”, based on the surrounding green landscape that is cherished by Greenwood’s local community.
Greenwood became an important economic hub and leading rail center for the Upper Savannah Region early on, thanks to the city’s location at the junction of nine railways. With the opening of the city’s first cotton mill, Greenwood Mills, the cotton industry flourished into the 20th century and supported the city’s economy. The Greenwood Mills enterprise built one of the largest privately-held companies in the industry and, by 1955, operated five plants and employed over 6,000 workers. Greenwood was also home to corporations such as Chemstrand Corporation, International Paper Company, and Monsanto Chemical Company. Greenwood’s ideal business climate had led to further diversification since the 1950s. Currently, the city houses several large industries including Milliken Textiles, Fujifilm, Velux-America, Eaton Corporation, and Pepsi Cola.
