Meadville, Pennsylvania

Located at the confluence of Cussewago Creek and French Creek, Meadville is a city in and the county seat of Crawford County, Pennsylvania and is generally considered part of the Pittsburgh Tri-State. Settled in 1788 by David Mead and nine others, Meadville was the first permanent settlement in northwest Pennsylvania. Meadville was incorporated in 1823 as a borough and later as a city in 1866. Today the city occupies 4.4 square miles and is home to more than 13,685 residents. Meadville is an active center for business, industry, education, the arts, recreation, service and tourism. Allegheny College and Edinboro University both have campuses within the city limits.

By the late 1800s, Meadville's economy was driven by logging, agriculture, and iron production. The Talon Corporation, headquartered in Meadville, played a significant role in the development of the zipper. Since the clothing industry was largely unaffected by the Depression, the community saw a population boom at that time. During World War II, the nearby Keystone Ordnance plant contributed additional jobs to the area. Meadville's industrial growth continued to prosper after the War. Major employers at the time included Talon, the railroad industry, American Viscose (later known as Avtex Fibers), and Channellock tools. In the 1980s, the region saw a decline in heavy industry. However, Meadville’s economy benefitted from a surge in light industry, mainly tool and die machine shops, earning Meadville the nickname, "Tool City, USA". The area has continued to experience growth into the 21st century.
