Latrobe, Pennsylvania

Situated on Loyalhanna Creek, in the Allegheny foothills, Latrobe, Pennsylvania serves as county seat of Westmoreland County and is part of the Pittsburgh metro area. Latrobe was named after Benjamin Henry Latrobe Junior, a civil engineer whose father was a celebrated architect (he was the architect who rebuilt the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. after the War of 1812), Lancaster is the birthplace of the banana split, professional football, Mister Rogers, golfer Arnold Palmer, and Rolling Rock beer (Latrobe Brewery). Latrobe is also home to Saint Vincent College, a four-year liberal arts college. Latrobe offers its nearly 9,000 residents a balance of country living and urban convenience.

Incorporated as a borough in 1854 (and eventually as a city in 1999), Latrobe's location along the route of the Pennsylvania Railroad helped the city develop into a significant industrial hub. Latrobe was also served by the Ligonier Valley Railroad from 1877 to 1952. Latrobe Brewing Company was founded in 1893, it was one of the largest breweries in the United States and the maker of Rolling Rock beer. It was later purchased by Labatt Brewing Company in 1987. Today, the Latrobe area offers a diverse manufacturing base. Included among the area’s industrial employers are Kennametal Inc., one of the world’s leading producers of cutting tools and wear-resistant parts made of cemented carbide; Latrobe Specialty Steel Company, maker of high performance specialty steels and alloys; and Westinghouse Specialty Metals, a manufacturer of seamless tubing for nuclear reactors and steam generators. Construction firms, retail, healthcare and education are other important facets of the area's economy.

Latrobe has a substantial legacy of manufacturing activity, in industries where asbestos-containing products were used. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma cancer. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer in Latrobe, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma attorney.
