Jeannette, Pennsylvania

Jeannette is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Occupying 2.4 square miles, Jeannette is home to more than 10,000 people. The community was established in 1888 and grew rapidly due in part to farmlands, pioneer glassworkers, and a newly constructed station on the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Accordingly, the community earned the distinction of being the "fastest growing community on the main line".

Shortly after incorporating as a borough in 1889, Jeannette also became known as "the glass city" in recognition of the significant glass factories founded in the area which contributed to the city's standing as the first large manufacturing town in Westmoreland County. At its peak, there were as many as seven significant glass factories operating in the city of Jeannette including some of the most well known in the history of the glass industry such as Jeannette Glass. These glass companies supplied the country with everything from plate glass windows, to bottles and milk glass for decades. Today, only two glass factories remain in the city. Jeannette's manufacturing history doesn't end with the glass industry. Other notable companies in Jeanette include The Pennsylvania Rubber Works and The Elliott Company (as it is known today). These two companies helped promote Jeannette as an industrial strength in the area. Products such as sports balls, gas masks, steam engines, and the first diesel-engine turbocharger became the fruits of their success. Today, Jeannette still thrives as a result of its industrial history.

For years, the use of asbestos containing products was common in manufacturing and industrial jobsites such as those found in Jeannette. Workers exposed to asbestos products may be at risk to develop malignant mesothelioma, a potentially fatal disease. You should consider contacting a mesothelioma attorney if you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Jeannette.
