Tiffin, Ohio

The City of Tiffin is the county seat of Seneca County, Ohio. The city as it exists today was formed by the merger in 1850 of two towns, Oakley and Tiffin, located on either side of the Sandusky River. The current population is about 18,000. At one time a center of glass and ceramic manufacturing, Tiffin's notable employers today include Heidelberg University, Tiffin University, Mercy Hospital, and potato chip makers Ballreich Bros., Inc.

Tiffin's origins date to the War of 1812, and the site of Fort Ball. In 1817, Erasmus Bowe built the Pan Yan Tavern near the fort, and the village of Oakley grew up around it. Across the river, the village of Tiffin was settled in 1820. A rivalry sprang up which was settled when the two villages merged. In 1888, natural gas was discovered, making Tiffin more attractive to industry. In 1899, the Great Western Pottery Company began producing mugs, vases and other wares. The company was sold in 1913 to the Standard Sanitary Pottery, one of the forerunners of American Standard, which manufactured kitchen and bath fixtures at its Tiffin plant until 2007. In 1880, the A.J. Beatty & Sons glass works relocated to Tiffin, and merged with the United States Glass Company in 1892. Later known as the Tiffin Glass Company, the factory produced stemware and tableware until its permanent closure in 1984. Many examples of Tiffin products, along with historical documents, are preserved at the Tiffin Glass Museum. Another long-time Tiffin company, National Machinery, has produced nut-and-bolt-forming machinery since 1874, and currently occupies a modern 600,000 square foot facility.

Tiffin's history of manufacturing activity during a period when asbestos materials were widely used makes asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma, a cause for concern.
