Solon is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. A suburb of Cleveland, Solon has a population of approximately 23,300. Solon adopted a zoning plan fairly early in its history, creating separate industrial and residential districts, along with municipal parks and recreational spaces. Solon was established in 1820. Agriculture was the main industry, with corn, wheat and dairy among the major crops. Solon incorporated as a village in 1917. The Bready Cultimotor Company built Solon's first manufacturing facility in 1929, producing garden tractors. After World War II, new industries began to arrive in Solon, many relocating from nearby Cleveland, and the town reincorporated as a city in 1961. The Bird Engineering Company relocated to Solon in 1959. Now Bird Technologies Group, the company continues to produce electronic communications products. Test equipment manufacturer Keithley Instruments, Inc. made its headquarters in Solon in 1964. Swagelok Company was founded in 1947 and now employs around 4,000 workers in its fluid systems manufacturing plant and headquarters. The Zirconium Corporation of America, now Zircoa, Inc., has been making specialty ceramics materials in Solon since 1953. Packaged foods are another key industry for the city. Nestle Foods operates a multi-use complex in Solon which includes refrigerated storage, research and development, the Stouffer's frozen foods plant, and a factory thrift store.
