Norwalk, Ohio

The city of Norwalk is the county seat of Huron County, Ohio. Located approximately ten miles south of Lake Erie, Norwalk has a population of just over 17,000. Many of Norwalk's early settlers came from Connecticut, and the city is named for its New England counterpart. The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad provides freight service through Norwalk. The city has a mix of manufacturing businesses, including Janesville Acoustics, New Horizons Baking Company, and Wooden Horse Corporation, founded by jockey Frank Lovato, Jr., which makes mechanical exercise horses for therapy and equestrian training.

In 1779, the citizens of Norwalk, Connecticut were burned out by British loyalists. In recompense, they were granted lands in Ohio's Western Reserve, a region which became known as the Firelands. In 1817, the first house was built in Norwalk Township by Platt Benedict of Danbury, Connecticut. Norwalk became the county seat in 1818, and by 1881 had grown large enough to incorporate as a city. In 1875, the A.B. Chase Company was established to produce hand-built pianos and organs. Although the company was acquired by United Piano Corporation in 1931, early Chase instruments are still prized for their quality workmanship and rich tone. In 1906, a company was founded which produced molds for concrete burial vaults. The company later expanded to septic tanks, bomb shelters and other precast concrete products. A successor company, the Norwalk Wastewater Equipment Company, Inc., or Norweco, continues to produce wastewater treatment equipment at its Norwalk factory. The Fisher-Titus Medical Center, founded in 1916 as Norwalk Memorial Hospital, now includes an acute care hospital, skilled-nursing facility and an assisted living facility.
