Newark, Ohio

The City of Newark is the county seat of Licking county, Ohio. Situated at the forks of the Licking River east of Columbus, Newark has a population of just over 47,500. Newark has a diverse manufacturing base, with employers such as Owens Corning Fiberglas Corporation, Kaiser Aluminum, Tamarack Farms Dairy and the Longaberger Company, whose unique headquarters is built in the shape of one of their signature baskets. Newark is also home to a campus of Ohio State University.

Newark was founded in 1802. In 1825, the Ohio and Erie Canal provided water transport and power for early industries. After 1850, the railroads began to come through, and by the end of the century, Newark had become a manufacturing and business center. The Heisey Glass Company opened in 1895, becoming known for its high-quality pressed glass and colonial patterns. Colored glass was added to the line in the early 20th century and figurines during World War II. Rising costs and price competition caused the company to decline, and the factory closed its doors for good in 1958. In 1898, the Newark Hospital Association was founded, a precursor to Licking Memorial Hospital, which was built in 1966. Owens Corning Fiberglas established its Newark plant in 1933, in a disused bottling plant. In 1907, the Newark Arcade Company built the Newark Arcade building, with rows of shops arranged along an attractive indoor "street", complete with central heating and electric lights. At the turn of the century, these early malls were still a novelty, inspired by European examples. Today, the Arcade is about one-third the size of a typical big-box store. Although the economy has declined somewhat in recent years, companies such as Anomatic Corporation and Universal Veneer Mill Corporation continue to provide a manufacturing presence in Newark.

Much of Newark's construction and manufacturing was concentrated during a period when asbestos materials were widely used placing workers at risk for asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma. If you or a loved one were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Newark, you may also benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma attorney.
