Miamisburg, Ohio

Miamisburg is a city on the Miami River in Ohio. Located in Montgomery County, Miamisburg has a population of just over 20,000. In recent decades, Miamisburg has focused on both economic development and historic preservation. Major employers in Miamisburg include Kettering Health Network, Avery Dennison, JatroDiesel and LexisNexis. The revitalized downtown area has several notable historic structures, including the 1913 Hamburger Wagon, the 1811 Daniel Gebhart Tavern Museum, and the 1884 Baum Opera House.

Originally settled around 1797, Miamisburg was formally platted in 1818. The completion of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1829 and the Great Miami Turnpike in 1838 simplified transport of freight and passengers. Further economic development was enabled by the arrival of railroads in 1851 and 1872. The Hoover and Gamble Company, makers of ice machines and twine-making machinery, began operations in Miamisburg in 1848. The Miamisburg Binder Twine and Cordage Company was established in 1893, and later taken over by the J.C. Groendyke Company. Other late 19th century industries in Miamisburg include two paper mills, a cigar factory, and several carriage and wagon wheel works. The Miamisburg Water Works and Electric Light Plant was in full operation by 1905, allowing for more modern methods of production. Perhaps Miamisburg's best-known 20th century enterprise was the Mound Laboratories operated by Monsanto Chemical Company, which made plutonium detonators and other equipment for nuclear weapons. The site is currently undergoing clean-up of radioactive and other hazardous materials. Manufacturing in Miamisburg today leans toward the high-tech, with products including biodiesel fuel, spinal implants and stable isotopes.

Miamisburg's history of manufacturing and historic preservation has made asbestos exposure a cause for concern.
