Marion, Ohio

The City of Marion is the county seat of Marion County, Ohio. With a population of close to 36,000 residents, Marion is the largest city in Marion County, located about 50 miles north of Columbus. Top employers include Whirlpool Corp., Nucor Steel Marion, Inc., and Marion General Hospital. Marion was the home of President Warren G. Harding, whose residence is preserved as a historical site.

Marion was founded in 1822 near a site know as Jacob's Well. Beginning in the late 19th century, Marion became a center of heavy industry. The Marion Steam Shovel Company, established in 1884, made power shovels, crawlers and draglines in Marion until the late 1990s. Marion equipment was used in the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Panama Canal, and in the 1960s, the company, now Marion Power Shovel, made massive caterpillar-tread crawlers to transport NASA rockets from the vehicle assembly building to the launch pad. Popcorn plays an important role in Marion's manufacturing history. The Wyandote Popcorn Company was founded in 1936, and continues to produce popcorn and snack foods today as Wyandote Inc. ConAgra Foods, another top employer, makes Orville Redenbacher and Act II microwave popcorn at its Marion plant, although it recently shut down its popcorn-bag printing operation there. Although heavy industry has declined in Marion, the city maintains a manufacturing base, supplemented by healthcare, retail and education.

Marion has a substantial history of manufacturing, making asbestos exposure of ongoing concern. Exposure to asbestos-containing materials puts workers at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma clinics in and around Marion are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were exposed to asbestos in Marion, you may benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
