Marietta is a city in Ohio located at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers, it is the county seat of Washington County, and has a population of just over 14,000. Marietta was founded in 1788 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. A 1795 treaty with local Native American peoples established a peaceful atmosphere that allowed the frontier outpost to grow into a permanent town. Marietta College was established in 1835, and early business endeavors included sawmills, brick factories, shipbuilding and iron foundries. The arrival of the railroads in 1857 and the discovery of oil in 1860 brought an influx of money and real estate development, as well as industrial growth. After World War II, Union Carbide established a ferroalloys plant. The Marietta complex grew to include the Union Carbide Plastics Division and the Eveready Battery Company. Other prominent companies which have had a 20th-century presence in Marietta include Remington Rand, American Cyanamid and BF Goodrich Company. Today, Marietta industries include a mix of manufacturing and high-tech, represented by companies such as Ferrar Scientific and Pioneer Pipe.
