Lima, Ohio

The City of Lima is the seat of Allen County, Ohio. Lima's current population is approximately 38,700 residents occupying a 12.9 square mile area. The former oil boom town's economy mixes retail, healthcare and education with manufacturing. Prominent employers include General Dynamics, Ford Motor Company and Proctor & Gamble. Lima is also home to the University of Northwestern Ohio, James A. Rhodes State College, and a campus of Ohio State University.

Lima has been the seat of Allen County since its founding in 1831. Although the first railroad through Lima was constructed in the 1850s, substantial industrial growth in Lima began with the discovery of oil in 1885. Standard Oil Company of Cleveland built a refinery around 1886, and the Lima oil field quickly became a major producer. Although oil production had declined by 1910, the refinery remained in operation, and is currently run by Husky Energy. The railroads also expanded in the late 19th century. Several railroads had machine shops and yards in Lima, and the Lima Locomotive Company got its start in 1869 as the Lima Agricultural Works. During World War II, the plant made Sherman tanks. After several mergers and a sale to Clark Equipment, the plant closed in 1981. Lima has also been home to a number of hospitals, including the Ottowa Valley Hospital and the Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, which later became a medium-security prison, and has since closed. The 1970s and 1980s saw a decline in manufacturing which has been partly replaced by retail and other service-sector industries.

Lima has a substantial history of manufacturing in industries known for their use of asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos exposure is an ongoing concern for workers, who may be at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. If you were exposed to asbestos in Lima and diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
