Fostoria, Ohio

Fostoria is a city in northwestern Ohio. Located at the juncture of three counties, Fostoria has a population of nearly 14,000 in an area of 7.5 square miles. The city has a mix of businesses, influenced by the glass, automobile and railroad industries. Prominent employers include process heating equipment manufacturers Fostoria Industries and J.F. Swinehart, and flooring manufacturer Roppe Corporation. Fostoria is a popular spot for train enthusiasts, as three main railroad lines intersect in the downtown area's "Iron Triangle". More than 100 trains pass through Fostoria daily.

Fostoria was created in 1854 from the merger of the villages of Rome and Risdon. That same year, track was laid for the first railroad line to route through Fostoria, the Fremont and Indiana Railroad. By 1900, five major train lines and three inter-urban lines cut through the city. Ready freight access increased industrialization. From the late 1880s to the 1920s, Fostoria was a major glass producing city, with 13 glass works, and related businesses such as the National Lime & Stone Company. In 1877, Fostoria boasted five buggy manufacturers, one of which, the Peabody Buggy Company, was a precursor to the Allen Motor Company, which operated from 1913 to 1921. In 1936, the former Peabody Buggy property became Electric Autolite Company's spark plug plant, and was later acquired by Ford in 1961. Fostoria Industries also arose out of the auto industry. Founded in 1917 as Fostoria Pressed steel, the company made sheet metal goods for Allen Motor Company and others. Today, Fostoria Industries makes process heating equipment such as infrared ovens and powder spray booths.
