Defiance, Ohio

Defiance is a city in Ohio, and the county seat of Defiance County. Located at the juncture of the Auglaize and Maumee Rivers, Defiance has a population of about 16,500 in an 11 square-mile area. Defiance has a small college-town atmosphere with convenient highway, train and air access to big-city amenities. The economy is a mix of education, healthcare, manufacturing and service sector businesses, with General Motors Powertrain division the city's largest employer. Defiance is home to Defiance College, a small liberal-arts college, which contributes to the city's cultural and entertainment opportunities.

The City of Defiance has its origins in a frontier stockade, Fort Defiance, built by General Anthony Wayne in 1794. The fort served as protection for settlers and as a command post for sorties against British forces during the War of 1812. In 1922, with the fort no longer needed, the town of Defiance was founded on its site. Agriculture was the chief industry initially, with first the canals and then the railways providing access to markets in larger cities. In 1870, the Christian Diehl Brewing Company began marketing beer to local customers. With the passage of Prohibition in 1920, the brewery shifted to condensed milk production, reorganizing as the Defiance Dairy Products Company. Although beer was reintroduced in 1933, the dairy products line was more successful, and the brewing operation was discontinued in 1955. Today, Diehl Food Ingredients operates as a business unit of SensoryEffects, manufacturing non-dairy powdered creamers and other specialty products. General Motors Powertrain and foundry has been a major presence in Defiance since 1948. Other companies of long-standing in Defiance include Baker-Shindler Contracting Company and Johns Manville.
