Chillicothe is a city on the Scioto River in southern Ohio, and the county seat of Ross County. Chillicothe has a population of approximately 22,000. Chillicothe was founded in 1796, and served as both the first and third capital of Ohio. For much of the 19th century, Chillicothe was a small rural town until the railroads arrived in the 1850s. Chillicothe was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, thanks to active participation by the town’s free black community and white abolitionists. In 1895, a train crash on the B&O line prompted the creation of an emergency hospital which would eventually become the present day Adena Health System. In 1890, the Mead Corporation opened a paper and pulp mill in Chillicothe, followed in 1919 by the Chillicothe Paper Company. Both mills are still in operation today, run by MeadWestvaco and Glatfelter Corporation, respectively. Other businesses active in Chillicothe in the early 20th century include a bottling works, Sears & Nichols canning factory, Wissler Brewery Company, and vacuum-cleaner makers The Ramey Company. In addition to the paper mills, Chillicothe also has a mix of service sector industries. Chillicothe’s VA Hospital, the first in the nation, grew out of medical facilities established in 1917 at Camp Sherman.
