Asbestos Exposure in Ashtabula, OH

Ashtabula is a city on the coast of Lake Erie in the State of Ohio. Located at the mouth of the Ashtabula River, the city has a population of just fewer than 21,000. Because of its lake and river access, and early establishment of railroad lines, Ashtabula was once an important stop on the Underground Railroad for slaves fleeing north into Canada. Present-day Ashtabula balances a modern-day industrial city with an awareness of history, showcased at the Hubbard House Underground Railroad site, the Great Lakes Marine Museum and a historic downtown shopping district.

Ashtabula was founded in 1803 by settlers from Connecticut. Attempts were made to charter a railroad as early as 1836, but it was not until 1873 that the Ashtabula, Youngstown and Pittsburgh line was completed, providing a route from the Pennsylvania coal fields to Lake Erie. Ashtabula became an important coal port, and coal shipping remains an important part of the city's economy. Other railroads followed, and despite an 1876 railroad bridge collapse which was the country's greatest rail disaster up to that point, Ashtabula had become a major transport and shipping hub by 1900. After World War II, industry in Ashtabula expanded, particularly the chemical industry. Ashtabula's early ties to Connecticut are reflected in the New England connections of some of those companies. Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation predecessor Olin Industries took over Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, CT in 1931. Reactive Metals, Inc., which produced extruded uranium at its Ashtabula plant from 1962 to about 1990, was at one time a division of Bridgeport Brass Company. The chemical industry is still active in Ashtabula, with companies including Detrex Corporation and Cristal Global.
