Fargo, North Dakota

Located on the western bank of the Red River of the North, Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota and functions as county seat of Cass County. As of 2010, Fargo was home to approximately 105,000 people. The city was founded in 1871 and quickly became the crossroads and economic center of southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

Present-day Fargo is established in an area that served as an early stopping point for steamboats traveling down the Red River during the late 1800s. Originally named “Centralia”, Fargo was renamed in honor of Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company founder, William Fargo. After Northern Pacific laid tracks through the city, Fargo experienced significant growth and flourished by the start of the 20th century. The local agricultural industry led to the formation of Fargo Foundry & Steel Manufacturing, a company that was initially founded to manufacture and repair farm equipment. In the 1970s, the company changed their name to Mid America Steel in order to reflect the change from a foundry to a steel fabrication company. In addition to Mid America Steel, Fargo is home to North Dakota State University (formerly North Dakota State Agricultural College), Xcel Energy (formerly Northern States Power Company), and St. Johns Hospital.

Fargo’s manufacturing and construction history places the city in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. If you worked with and/or around asbestos containing materials, you may be at risk to develop malignant mesothelioma. If you or a loved one have been exposed to asbestos in Fargo, you may benefit by seeking counsel from a mesothelioma lawyer.
