Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina with a population of over 750,000, making it the 18th largest city in the United States. The first European settlers arrived in 1755 and in 1769 a 17-pound gold nugget was discovered, attracting many immigrants to the area. Since its early days, the "Queen City" has matured into a major U.S. financial center, and is now the second largest banking center in the United States after New York City.

Following the gold rush of the late 19th century, Charlotte's tobacco and cotton crops were the major source of revenue for the community. It was not until the early 1900s when Charlotte became a cotton-processing center, railroad hub, and distribution axis. Arlington Cotton Mills, Charlotte Cotton Mills, and Johnston Mills opened during this time. Charlotte's ideal economic climate initiated the opening of other local businesses including Celanese Corporation, Swift Edible Oil Company, and Savona Manufacturing Company. In the 1970s, Charlotte's banking industry began to develop into today's modern-day banking prominence. Under the leadership of financier Hugh McColl, North Carolina National Bank was transformed into a key national player through several aggressive acquisitions before being acquired by Wells Fargo. Charlotte's continuous economic success has turned the city into a haven for several Fortune 500 company headquarters such as Bank of America, Nucor, Duke Energy, Goodrich Corporation, and SPX Corporation. Charlotte is also the principal city for NASCAR, housing multiple offices as well as the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
