Waterford, New York

Waterford is a town in New York State, with a population of approximately 8,500. Located at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, and the junction of the Erie and Champlain Canals, Waterford has long combined scenic beauty with industrial might. The power of Cohoes Falls, which once directly supplied Waterford's textile mills, is now harnessed by several electrical utilities. Tourists enjoying a cruise on the Erie Canal bypass the falls at the Waterford Flight, a series of lift locks which is the highest in the world. Waterford still retains a manufacturing base, including specialty chemicals producer Momentive Performance Materials and special-occasion clothing maker Ursula of Switzerland.

Waterford was ideally situated for industry, with the rivers and canals providing the means for power generation and shipping. Early manufacturers include the Button Fire Engine Works and the Gage Machine Works. A railroad line was established in 1853 which eventually became part of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, and Waterford continued to grow. Nearly a dozen knitting mills sprung up in the last quarter of the 19th century, including the Massasoit, Munson, Bishopton, and Clover mills. In 1872, Frank Gilbert purchased the Mohawk & Hudson paper mill, which is still in operation today as the mill and sample department of Mohawk Fine Papers, Inc. Although textile production has largely died out in the area, Waterford still produces specialty paper goods, sealants and chemical products, and high-security goods for the detention industry.
