Tarrytown, New York

Tarrytown is a village in Westchester County in New York State. Occupying a 5.7 square mile section of the town of Greenburgh, Tarrytown has a population of just over 11,000 people. The village is located on the Hudson River at the Tappan Zee Bridge. Immortalized by writer Washington Irving in the story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," Tarrytown was a popular residence during the 19th century for wealthy industrialists. At one time, more than 65 grand estates made up the "Millionaires' Colony". Today, a mere half-dozen remain, including Lyndhurst, the Gothic Revival castle built by railroad magnate Jay Gould. Washington Irving’s own home, the 10-acre “Sunnyside” is now a museum. Other notable historic sites include the 1885 Tarrytown Music Hall theater, the Hackley School, a boarding and day school founded in 1899, and the Marymount Campus of Fordham University.

The first European settlement in Tarrytown was established in 1645, with wheat farming the principal industry until the 19th century. Following the Civil War, Tarrytown became more industrialized, with factories producing shoes, silk, and steam pumps by 1890. The automotive industry was dominant in Tarrytown for much of the 20th century. The Maxwell-Briscoe Company produced motorcars from 1904 until 1907, when the factory was destroyed by fire. The Chevrolet Motor Company, later the General Motors Assembly Division, opened its doors in 1915. In 1924, with GM financing, the Fisher Body Corporation built a plant nearby. Except for a brief period during World War II producing aircraft wings as Eastern Aircraft, the combined plants produced automobiles in Tarrytown until 1996. Today, Tarrytown's primary industries are in the fields of healthcare, medical and pharmaceutical research. Bayer Healthcare, Hitachi Medical Corporation of America and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals are all headquartered in Tarrytown.

Tarrytown's history of industry and restoration of 19th century structures makes asbestos exposure an ongoing concern.
