Syracuse, New York

Syracuse is a city in Onondaga County, New York. Syracuse, which has a population of approximately 145,000, is named for its similarities to the Italian city of Siracusa - both cities have salt-water springs, and a neighboring named Salina. Syracuse is the permanent home of the New York State Fair. Although many historic buildings have been lost to urban renewal, Syracuse can still boast a wide range of industrial architecture and Victorian building styles, such as Beaux Arts, Gothic Revival and Second Empire. Syracuse is also home to Syracuse University, a coeducational university founded in 1870 as an offshoot of Genesee College.

European explorers arrived in the Syracuse area with Samuel Champlain in 1615, but the area was not settled until the early 18th century. In 1788, as part of the Treaty of Fort Stanwix which ended the French and Indian war, a large area of the Onondaga Salt Springs Reservation was transferred to the Europeans settlers for salt production. After the War of 1812 and the opening of the Erie Canal, the salt industry expanded rapidly. Syracuse was named in 1819, and until 1900 was the chief producer of salt in the United States. Syracuse became a transportation hub, and other industries followed. German immigrants made Syracuse a major beer brewing locale, beginning in 1860. The Will and Baumer Candle Company has produced candles since its founding in 1855, to such notable customers as the Vatican. World War II brought a second industrial expansion, with companies such as Carrier Corporation, Crouse Hinds, General Motors, Chrysler and General Electric having substantial manufacturing operations in Syracuse. Manufacturing began to decline in the 1970s, and many of these companies have left Syracuse. Smaller, more diverse businesses in the education and service industries account for much of the economic base, with top employers including Crouse Hospital, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
