Port Chester, New York

Port Chester is a village of the town of Rye, New York. It has an estimated population of nearly 28,000, occupying an area of 2.5 square miles. Following the decline in manufacturing in the late 20th century, Port Chester has focused on the retail and service sectors to boost its economy. National Collector's Mint, Inc., issuers of collectible and commemorative coins since 1991, has its headquarters in Port Chester. Movie theaters and a "Restaurant Row" have created new interest in the downtown areas, which blend historic architecture with modern retail shops.

The Village of Port Chester was settled in the 17th century by colonists from Connecticut. Shipyards and sawmills formed its earliest industries, followed by shipping of produce from local farms. Port Chester incorporated as a village in 1868. Towards the late 19th century, the railroads supplanted steamboats as a means of shipping, and agriculture gave way to industry. The manufacturing boom drew workers from Ireland, Germany, Poland and Italy to the area to work at Russell Burdsall & Ward Nut and Bolt Company, linen makers Ernest Simons Manufacturing Company (est. 1878) and Empire Brush Works, among others. In 1920, Beech Nut-Life Savers established their headquarters in Port Chester, in a building adorned with replicas of the familiar candy rolls. The company closed its Port Chester operation in 1984, and the historic landmark building has since been converted into apartments. Although large manufacturers like Life Savers have left the area, some smaller operations, such as Neri's Bakery (est. 1911) remain. The former New York United Hospital, which closed in 2006, is scheduled to be redeveloped into residential units.

Port Chester has a substantial history of industry and construction during the 20th century, at a time when asbestos-containing materials were widely used, putting workers at risk for mesothelioma.
