Middletown, New York

Middletown is a city in the state of New York. Located in the Hudson Valley area near the Wallkill River, Middletown has a population of approximately 25,388. Middletown is largely a residential community, with a number of residents commuting by train to New York City and neighboring towns. Local employment tends towards retail, healthcare and other service industries, represented by employers such as Horton Memorial Hospital, Middletown Psychiatric Center, and the Galleria mall. Middletown is also home to State University of New York - Orange. The city center has a number of historic churches and sizeable Victorian homes, some of which have been converted to business uses.

Middletown was first settled sometime around 1744, and was organized as a village in 1848. In the late 19th century, several railroad lines, including the New York, Ontario and Western Railway had branches running through the rural community, making it more attractive to business. By 1888, Middletown manufacturers included Howell Hinchman & Company, which produced leather and finished leather goods, and Middletown Paper Box Company. Other products of the day included cigars, men's dress shirts and collars, and condensed milk. The Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company established a plant in 1881, with milk provided by local dairies. The Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital opened in 1874; its 226-acre campus provided occupational therapy and treatment for the mentally ill well into the 20th century. In 1917, the Schrade Cutlery Company purchased the former National Saw Company factory. Although Schrade has left the area, the building is still in use. Although manufacturing took a sharp downturn in Middletown and the surrounding area in the 1960s and 1970s, low housing costs made it a desirable residential area, and the city's economy has begun to recover.

Middletown's legacy of manufacturing and adaptive reuse of historic structures has made asbestos exposure an ongoing concern. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma cancer centers in and around Middletown are listed at the bottom of this page. If you were exposed to asbestos in Middletown, you may benefit by seeking counsel from a mesothelioma attorney.
