Flushing, New York

Flushing is a neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City, in the state of New York. It is located about 10 miles east of Manhattan, across the East River. Flushing is a densely settled neighborhood, with approximately 176,000 residents. This diversity extends to religion as well; Flushing boasts more than 200 houses of worship. Cultural attractions include historic landmark buildings such as Flushing Town Hall, Flushing High School, Old Quaker Meeting House, the Queens Museum of Art, and Queens Botanical Garden.

Flushing was settled by the Dutch in 1644, and became a town in 1683, after New York came under English colonial rule. Originally a rural area, Flushing was the site of the first commercial tree nurseries in the country, including the William Prince Nursery, founded in 1737. Although the nurseries are gone, many of the trees in Flushing today are descended from nursery stock. In 1898, Flushing was annexed into New York City, along with the other towns of Queens County to form the new borough of Queens. Bridge and subway access from the city prompted increased residential and commercial development, as workers moved out into the suburbs. Flushing Hospital Medical Center, founded in 1884, grew from a single room in a rented house to today's 293-bed campus. Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, New York's second-largest public park has played host to two World's Fairs, in 1939 and 1964. Elaborate pavilions, exhibit halls and sculptures were built for the fairs, and a few remain as public monuments, including the 1964 Unisphere, and the Queens Museum of Art, which occupies the 1939 New York City Pavilion building.

Flushing's history of construction activity includes both new structures and restoration of historic properties, putting workers in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. We have identified numerous jobsites where such exposure has occurred. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in Flushing, you may benefit from contacting Dr. Harvey Pass. Additionally, you should know that mesothelioma law firms represent people from Flushing who were exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.
