Lyndhurst, New Jersey

Lyndhurst is a township along the Hackensack River in Bergen County, New Jersey. Settled in the 17th century as part of a region known as New Barbadoes Neck, Lyndhurst was incorporated as a separate township in 1825, and permanently established as the township of Lyndhurst in 1917. During the 20th century, Lyndhurst was known for its machinery and metal products manufacturing. Although heavy industry has declined, Lyndhurst retains some manufacturing companies, along with a mix of service and commercial industries, including retail shops and restaurants. Representative employers include underwear manufacturers Wacoal America, Inc. (est. 1952), Thyssenkrupp Elevator Corporation, and Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc.

Lyndhurst remained a small rural community for much of its early history. The Industrial Directory of New Jersey for 1915 describes a town of about 2,500 residents, with one railroad and no sewer system. Local industries included a boiler manufacturer, cement block maker, and a clothing company. The two largest employers of the day were valve manufacturers the Leslie Company and insulation makers United Cork Companies. Leslie was founded in 1905, and produced marine service valves in Lyndhurst until 1968, when operations moved to Parsippany, New Jersey. The Canadian Car and Foundry Company was engaged in producing munitions for the war effort in 1917 when an act of sabotage caused a fire and chain of explosions which destroyed the plant. Thanks to the efforts of Theresa "Tessie" McNamara, a switchboard operator who contacted each of the buildings, all the employees escaped with no loss of life. Today, the only remnant of the plant is the smokestack, which is incorporated into a small park dedicated to Tessie.

Lyndhurst has a diverse history of industrial and manufacturing activity during a time when asbestos-containing materials were widely used. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disease.
