Edgewater, New Jersey

Edgewater is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. Located along the Hudson River, Edgewater has a current population of about 11,500. First settled by Europeans in 1640 as Vriessendael, Edgewater became a borough in 1894. Over the years, Edgewater has gone from an industrial center dominated by chemical manufacturing to a residential and retail-oriented area, with many former factory sites redeveloped into condominiums and shopping centers. Several sites are currently undergoing environmental remediation.

Edgewater industry began to develop in a former marshland area known as Shadyside. The Hudson River Dye Mills, Edgewater's first chemical company, was founded in 1843. It became Hudson River Chemical Works in 1862, producing sulfuric acid, soda ash, textile dyes and other chemicals. From 1900 until about 1967, the plant was operated by General Chemical Works. After the Civil War, manufacturing developed in earnest, aided by the railroads which criss-crossed the city. Barrett Manufacturing Company began making coal tar roofing materials in 1876, and by 1920 the facility included tar and pitch tanks, an anhydrous ammonia plant, acid house and boiler house. Barrett was acquired by Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation in 1920, which continued operations until 1971. Spencer Kellogg & Sons, Inc. established a seed-oil processing plant in 1910 to manufacture linseed and caster oils. After becoming part of Textron in 1961, it sold part of its manufacturing facility to nearby Lever Brothers, which had been making soap and household products since the 1920s. Textron ceased operations in the 1980s, while Lever Brothers maintained a research and development operation in Edgewater from the 1950s until 2003. Manufacturing in Edgewater gradually declined in the late 20th century.

Edgewater has a lengthy and diverse history of manufacturing and renovation activity, placing it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma treatment options in and around Edgewater are listed at the bottom of this page.
