Dover, New Jersey

Dover is a town on the Rockaway River in New Jersey. Located in Morris County, Dover was incorporated in 1869 and has a population of just over 18,000 in a 2.7 square mile area. During the 19th century, Dover was a bustling industrial community. Today, healthcare, education and retail also play a prominent role in the economy. Since 1976, Dover has been home to the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, the only accredited technical school of its kind. Typical Dover companies include Lakeland Bus Lines, Deltronic Crystal Industries, heat treating equipment supplier Mannings, USA and Alcoa Howmet metal casting.

Dover was settled in 1722 by John Jackson, who established a small forge near Granny's Brook. Dover became a village in 1826, and by the late 18th century was home to numerous industries, including textile mills, knitting mills, boiler works and rolling mills. In 1880, the Dover Powder Depot was created by the War Department. Now known as the Picatinny Arsenal, the facility has provided munitions manufacturing and research to various military branches for more than a century. In the early 20th century, the Metal Hose & Tubing Company opened a plant in Dover. They were acquired by DAYCO Corporation in 1960, and renamed the National Hose Company. In 1896, Paul Guenther established his first silk mill in Dover. By the 1920s, Paul Guenther, Inc. was the largest silk hosiery manufacturer in the world. In 1927, the company was sold to Gotham Silk Company and in 1943 to the McGregor Sportswear Company, which manufactured uniform jackets during World War II and civilian apparel as McGregor-Doniger Inc. until 1968. The Guenther mill building still stands, and is used for commercial and storage space.
