Bridgeton, New Jersey

Bridgeton is a city on the Cohansey River in New Jersey. Located near Delaware Bay, Bridgeton is the county seat of Cumberland County and has a population of about 25,300. Bridgeton was settled in 1686 and incorporated in 1865. Home to the largest historic district in New Jersey, Bridgeton boasts a number of legacy properties that date from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Weber's Candy Store, a longtime landmark established in 1888, closed its doors for the final time in 2011. Representative employers include South State, Inc., South Woods State Prison, and White Wave.

Bridgeton's earliest industry was a sawmill built in 1686 by founder Richard Hancock. An iron-works was built in 1814. Bridgeton industrialized rapidly after the Civil War, with glass, metal stamping and dairy products among the notable industries. The Cohansey Glass Manufacturing Company was established in 1870, producing window glass, bottles and jars at its 15-building complex until about 1900. The Cumberland Glass Company, founded in 1880, also made glass products, including the cobalt blue bottles used by Bromo Seltzer, and had its own narrow-gauge railway to move finished products. Cumberland was acquired by the Illinois Glass Company in 1920, and subsequently merged to form Owens-Illinois in 1930. A 1956 postcard noted it as the third-largest glass bottle plant in the United States. The plant closed permanently in 1984. The Ferracute Machine Company made machine presses for coffins, coins and other metal items from about 1904 to 1968. The Bridgeton Condensed Milk Company was incorporated in 1903; the plant burned down in 1992. Bridgeton has undergone a manufacturing decline since the late 20th century. In recent years, culture and tourism have become a focus of economic activity.
