Belleville, New Jersey

Belleville is a township in Essex County, New Jersey. Settled in 1797 and officially incorporated in 1839, Belleville has a current population of just under 36,000 residents. Geographically, Belleville is bordered on the east by the Passaic River, and by the Second River to the south, two sources of water power which contributed to the township's early industrialization. Today, Belleville is a largely residential area with a manufacturing and service-based economy. Belleville is home to the Clara Maass Medical Center, founded in 1868 as the Newark German Hospital.

Industrial development in Belleville was greatly assisted not only by water power from the rivers, but by the advent of steam engines, which were introduced to the township in 1753. Wire manufacturing was a notable industry during the 18th century. Other companies, such as the De Witt Wire Cloth Company and Eastwood Wire Manufacturing Company (later Eastwood-Nealley Corporation) made fourdrinier wires for the textile industry. Eastwood-Nealley was acquired by International Silver in 1960. World War I brought a boom in American dye manufacturing, as German dyestuffs were unavailable. In 1901, the New York Color & Chemical Company constructed a 10-acre dye factory in Belleville. In 1924, it became a subsidiary of the American Dyewood Company and operated until sometime in the 1970s. Wallace & Tiernan made water treatment products from 1921-1996. Walter Kidde & Company began producing fire pumps and safety equipment in 1917. After World War II, executives from Kidde, Wallace and Eastwood created the Belleville Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides grants for higher education. Although the companies themselves are no longer in Belleville, their legacy continues to provide for the growth and improvement of the township.

Belleville has a lengthy history of manufacturing and industry which places it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Belleville, you may benefit from contacting Dr. Harvey Pass. Additionally, mesothelioma lawyers may be able to give guidance if you were exposed to asbestos in Belleville and then diagnosed with mesothelioma.
