Pascagoula, Mississippi

Pascagoula is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi. It is the county seat, and has a population of about 26,000. Located on the Pascagoula River beside the Gulf of Mexico, Pascagoula combines an active seaport with scenic landscapes and quiet residential neighborhood lined with live oak trees. Like many Gulf Coast communities, Pascagoula suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but many redevelopment projects are underway. Prominent employers include shipbuilder Northrop Grumman, Chevron, Mississippi Phosphates and BP/Amoco. Singing River Island was also home to Naval Station Pascagoula from 1985-2006. The property has been transferred to the Mississippi Secretary of State's office, awaiting further disposition.

Pascagoula is named for its early inhabitants, a Native American people. According to legend, the Pascagoula drowned themselves in the river rather than be enslaved by the Biloxi people. They are said to have chanted as they walked together into the water, giving rise to the legend of the "Singing River". A French colony from 1699 to 1781, Pascagoula passed briefly into Spanish hands before coming under United States control in 1798. For its first two centuries, Pascagoula was a small agricultural and fishing community, only incorporating as a city in 1904. Naval shipbuilding during World War II drove a population explosion. Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation was founded in 1938 and built cargo ships, destroyers and nuclear attack submarines, among others. At its peak in the late 1970s, the shipyard employed some 25,000 workers. Ingalls shipyard has had several operators through the years, most recently Northrop Grumman. In 2011, the yard was spun off as Huntington Ingalls Industries. Oil refining is also a key industry in Pascagoula. Standard Oil of Kentucky built an oil refinery in 1961. Now owned by Chevron, the refinery produces benzene, paraxylene and gasoline, processing nearly 14 million gallons of crude oil daily.

Pascagoula's history of shipbuilding and other heavy industry makes asbestos exposure a continuing concern for workers. Asbestos exposure may put workers at risk for asbestos cancer. If you or a loved one have been exposed to asbestos in Pascagoula, you may benefit by seeking counsel from an asbestos lawyer.
