Laurel, Mississippi

Laurel is a city in southeast Mississippi on Tallahala Creek. A former timber industry town, Laurel presents an image of Southern graciousness and charm, thanks in part to a 1909 city master plan designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. Laurel's Central Historic District preserves a collection of early 20th century building styles, from Queen Anne to Craftsman. The city is also home to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, Mississippi's oldest art museum, founded in 1921, and Landrum's Homestead & Village, a re-created 19th-century settlement and living history museum. Top employers in Laurel include Sanderson Farms, Howse Implement and Thermo-Kool.

Laurel was established in 1882 as a timber town in Mississippi's Pine Belt region, growing along with the timber industry. Railroad access followed a year later, and in 1893, Eastman-Gardiner & Company established a large-scale lumber mill. More mills and related industries appeared soon after. In 1899, the Lindsey Wagon Company began producing 8-wheeled log wagons. In 1904, the Laurel Machine & Foundry Company was started to provide metal parts for the wagon company; today, it is a general service foundry producing cast and fabricated metal parts and mill supplies. The Mason Fibre Company, which in 1926 began making hardboard from wood paste, a by-product of the lumber mills, evolved into the Masonite Corporation. Masonite is still a major employer in Laurel, though they are no longer headquartered here. The discovery of oil in Laurel in 1942 spurred industrial development in a new direction, and today more than 150 companies provide oil-related services. Laurel's largest employer, Howard Industries, has produced electrical products since 1968, expanding to five divisions in the process. Other items manufactured in Laurel since the 1950s and 1960s include drag conveyor systems, walk-in refrigerators and plastic moldings.
